Going Through the Motions as a Dad.

Last week, I was playing Connect Four with my daughter.
We were dropping discs, blocking each other’s moves, laughing a little — doing all the things that probably looked like a dad being fully engaged.
And in many ways, I was there.
I was sitting with her. I was looking at the board. I was playing the game.
But then I noticed something.
I was going through the motions.
My hands knew what to do. My eyes were on the board. I was responding when she talked.
Nothing looked wrong.
But inside, part of me had quietly checked out.
Not completely. Not dramatically. Just enough to notice that I wasn’t as present as I wanted to be.
And I think a lot of dads know that feeling.
You can be sitting right there with your child and still feel like part of you is somewhere else.
Thinking about work. Thinking about money. Thinking about dinner, emails, bills, laundry, or the thing you still haven’t finished.
For a lot of busy dads, burnout doesn’t always look like a breakdown. "
Sometimes it looks like showing up on the outside while quietly checking out on the inside.
And I want to be clear: noticing this doesn’t mean you’re failing as a dad.
Sometimes noticing is the first sign that you’re ready to come back.
A Simple Way to Come Back
The next time you catch yourself going through the motions, try this:
1. Name it.
“I’m here, but I’m not fully here.” No shame. No story. Just notice it.
2. Take one breath. Not to fix everything. Just to give yourself a second to return.
3. Do one small thing.
Look your child in the eyes. Ask a real question. Smile. Move closer. Put the phone down. Say, “I get to be here.”
That small shift may not turn the moment into some perfect movie scene.
But it can bring you back just enough.
And sometimes, that’s where being a present dad begins.
Not with perfection.
But with catching yourself when you drift — and choosing, even in a small way, to return.
Want Support With This?
If this resonates with you, I offer a free Dad Energy Breakthrough Session.
It’s a private coaching conversation valued at $300 where we can talk about what’s been draining your energy, what’s affecting your presence at home, and what small shifts could help you feel more grounded as a dad.
To make sure the conversation is a good fit, I ask each dad to complete a short application first.
